Ed Moses (1926–2018) was an American artist known for his experimental approach to abstract painting. Born in Long Beach, California, he studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and became a key figure in the West Coast art scene. Moses was associated with the Los Angeles-based Ferus Gallery, which played a crucial role in shaping contemporary art in the mid-20th century. His work, characterized by gestural abstraction and intricate surface textures, has been exhibited at major institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and the Whitney Museum of American Art. A retrospective of his career was held at LACMA in 1996, highlighting his decades-long exploration of abstraction. Moses continually reinvented his style, experimenting with materials and techniques throughout his career. His legacy endures as a pioneering force in postwar American painting. He remained active in the studio until his passing in 2018 at the age of 91.
