Eric Fischl (born 1948) is an American painter and sculptor known for his psychologically charged figurative works. Born in New York City, he studied at the California Institute of the Arts and emerged as a key figure in the Neo-Expressionist movement of the 1980s. Fischl gained recognition for his provocative suburban narratives, exploring themes of intimacy, dysfunction, and desire. His work has been exhibited in major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Internationally, his paintings have been showcased at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Tate Modern in London. A major retrospective of his work was held at the Whitney Museum in 1986. Fischl continues to push the boundaries of figurative painting, often addressing contemporary social issues. As of 2025, he remains an influential force in the contemporary art world.
