Françoise Gilot (1921–2023) was a French painter, writer, and muse known for her vibrant compositions and contributions to modern art. Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, she studied at the Sorbonne and the École des Beaux-Arts before developing a distinctive style influenced by Cubism and Fauvism. Gilot’s work has been exhibited in major institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Centre Pompidou, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. Though widely known for her relationship with Pablo Picasso, she established an independent artistic career spanning over seven decades. Her paintings explore themes of mythology, nature, and the human form with bold color and dynamic line work. She was the subject of the 2012 retrospective “Françoise Gilot: A Painter’s Journey” at the Gagosian Gallery. Beyond painting, she authored the best-selling memoir “Life with Picasso”, offering a rare perspective on the artist’s world. Gilot’s legacy endures as a pioneering figure in 20th-century modernism, celebrated for her resilience and artistic vision.
