March Avery (1932–2022) was an American painter known for her vibrant color palettes and simplified, lyrical depictions of everyday life. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of renowned modernist painter Milton Avery and developed her own distinct style while maintaining a connection to his legacy. Her work, often featuring landscapes, portraits, and domestic scenes, has been exhibited at major institutions, including the Brooklyn Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art, and the Phillips Collection. Though she worked outside the mainstream art world for much of her career, her reputation grew steadily over the years. In 2021, Blum & Poe gallery in Los Angeles held a major solo exhibition of her paintings, further solidifying her influence. Her use of bold yet restrained forms and expressive color placed her within the lineage of modernist American painting. Avery continued painting well into her later years. She passed away in 2022, leaving behind a rich body of work celebrated for its warmth and clarity.
